Osud – 2021 – Janacek Theatre – Brno – Robert Carsen

– Bachtrack

“Here the production is well served by Casari and Sheffield, who are similar enough vocally to make us believe that they are the same character; and  both handle the high-lying role with elan.”

“A wonderfully sensitive Tenor sound with warmth and energy”

Tenor Enrico Casari and Philip Sheffield shared the role of Živný – the Italian was also a vocally believable, strongly exalted hero, the Englishman perfectly styled himself into an ageing man who remembers ancient outbursts of emotion and finally succumbs to them again.

Under chief conductor Marko Ivanovic the Moravian National Theater Orchestra and choir perform at a profound level . Sharply drawn characters dominate the scene: the English Philip Sheffield as old ˇZivn´y, the Italian Enrico Casari as his youthEgo, the Czech Alˇzbˇeta Pol´ackov´a as a loving Mila and Natascha Petrinsky, who was born in Vienna , as their bitterly angry mother.

Operawire

“Sheffield’s singing was very expressive, the vocal line was expertly crafted”

“Sheffield  produced a superb acting performance as Živny as he wandered through the narrative reacting to his younger self and trying to give shape to his memories in the first two acts, and then breaking down under the emotional weight of his past in the final act.”

Loge – Das Rheingold – 2019

“The Loge of  Philip Sheffield has a keenly projected sound and fine diction”

Richard Laing – The Wagner Society – 2019

“Philip Sheffield’s dapper, weaselly Loge is memorably acted, voiced with a distinctive metallic edge which rather suits this sharp dealer in spin.”

“Philip Sheffield is an experienced lyric tenor with a wide range of roles, and  he created a wonderful picture of Loge as the wily eternal trickster.”
